A cozy logic puzzle · iPhone & iPad
One owl in every grove, row and column.
Hootdoku is a calm logic puzzle set in a moonlit forest. Give every patterned grove exactly one owl, keep the owls out of each other’s space, and enjoy the click of a board solved by reasoning alone. No numbers. No guessing.
- 410 levels
- 10 groves
- 5×5 to 50×50
- 44 owls

How to play
Three little rules.
The forest is split into groves, each with its own colour and pattern. Your job is to give every grove a home owl.
-
1 One owl per grove
Every grove gets exactly one owl. A grove with a single open spot? Its owl has to live there.
-
2 One per row and column
An owl claims its whole row and column, so no other owl can share them.
-
3 Owls never touch
Owls need their space. No two owls may sit next to each other, not even diagonally.
Tap a spot once to mark an ✕ where no owl can go. Tap it again to place an owl.
You have three hearts. An owl in the wrong spot costs one, and the owls fly off when they’re gone.
Every puzzle can be solved with pure logic. You never have to guess.
Try it right here
Settle the first groves.
These are the opening levels of Whispering Woods, the first grove in the game. Tap once for ✕, twice for an owl.
On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to move, Space to mark or place, and Backspace to clear an ✕. Long-press a spot to clear its ✕.
Hints that teach
Stuck? The owls will explain.
A hint never just hands you the answer. It reads your board and shows the next step of logic, with a name you’ll start to spot on your own.
- Last Spot
- This grove has just one open spot left, so its owl must land here.
- Owl’s Reach
- An owl claims its row, column and grove. Mark the spots around it.
- Snug Grove
- A grove that fits in one row claims that whole row.
- Blocked Branch
- An owl here would block every spot in another grove, so this spot stays empty.
- Crowded Canopy
- Three groves squeezed into three rows claim all of them.

The journey
Ten groves, from 5×5 to 50×50.
Start with tiny boards and work up to sprawling forests, with a smaller breather board every few levels. On big boards you can zoom in, follow the row and column rulers, and find your way with the mini-map.

Daily Grove
One new puzzle for everyone, every day.
A fresh grove grows at midnight UTC, and every player gets the same board. It starts at 7×7 on Monday and grows through the week to 12×12 on Sunday.
- Race the clock on today’s leaderboard, or look back at yesterday’s.
- Every level you finish has its own leaderboard for your best time.
- Offline? Today’s grove still works. Your time just won’t be ranked.

The Owlery
44 owls to discover.
Every grove is home to four real owl species, from common to legendary, plus a few wanderers you’ll meet along the way. Each one comes with a fun fact, and any owl you’ve found can perch on your boards.

Barn Owl
LegendaryIts heart-shaped face funnels sound so well it can catch a mouse in total darkness.

Snowy Owl
LegendaryMales grow whiter with age; the oldest can be almost pure white.

Elf Owl
UncommonThe lightest owl in the world, about as heavy as a golf ball. It nests in saguaro holes.

Burrowing Owl
CommonLives underground and can mimic a rattlesnake’s rattle to scare off intruders.

Great Grey Owl
RareIt can hear a vole under deep snow and plunge straight through the crust to catch it.

Little Owl
UncommonThe owl of Athena. Its scientific name honours the goddess of wisdom.
Solve levels, finish groves and earn three stars everywhere to fill your Owlery.
